How The Epley Maneuver Stops the Vertigo Spins In Springfield, IL

By August 1, 2022No Comments4 min read

Hey everybody, this is Dr. Pat from the Springfield Wellness Center and today we’re going to be talking about vertigo. And we’re going to be demonstrating something called Epley’s Maneuver which is an effective treatment for positional vertigo here.

Vertigo is a condition that is very uncomfortable for people to experience. It includes things like dizziness, vomiting, nausea, unsteadiness, and sometimes it just robs people of their quality of life. They’re not able to work, they’re not able to take care of their family and take care of their house. And so it’s a really devastating condition.

What Epley’s maneuver does is it helps to address the cause of vertigo, especially BPPV, which stands for Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo.

Now, what that includes is where the crystals in the inner ear get dislodged and that creates a deep feeling of unsteadiness, dizziness…can sometimes cause the spins to happen. And so what we’re doing with Epley’s Maneuvers, we’re helping to reorient and reconfigure where those crystals are by moving the head in different positions. And so we’re going to demonstrate that today, just kind of take you through an example of what that looks like, and just how easy it is.

So we’re gonna go ahead and get started with that now. So Diana, can you move your head back towards me. So I’m gonna start with the head in the position where it can fall freely backwards, and it’s going to tip back here, a little bit off camera, but it’s backwards into the right here. Now, if you have vertigo, this is going to make you very dizzy, okay. But we’re going to stay in this position until that dizziness starts to subside, and we can start to orient ourselves there. Once we do that, we’re going to wait another 10 or 15 seconds, make sure everything is calm.

The next thing we do is rotate over to this side. Again, this will probably cause dizziness for someone suffering with this, and then we’re gonna wait until that starts to subside. Plus another 15 – 20 seconds or so. Once we do that, the next position we’re going to do is have you flip to your side and keep looking over your left shoulder here. So she’s going to turn and be now in this way. Now her head is facing the floor and her body is on her side. We’re staying over that left shoulder here, okay, and we’re gonna stay here again until the dizziness subsides, add another 15 – 20 seconds here. Finally, to finish the move, she’s going to bring her legs forward. And she’s going to sit up here quickly from this move here still looking over her left shoulder. So she’s looking at me. And now I’m going to have her turn her head and face forward there.

Okay, so that completes the maneuver there. And depending on which side dizziness is which side you would start on. And again, this is something as you can see, it’s pretty simple. It can even be done at home if you know what you’re doing. And so hopefully this video will help educate you a little bit about how this works. And if this is something that can help pull you out of one of those spells where it’s really bad and that can make a world of difference you know in your life and your quality of life.

So, I hope you found this video useful. If you did, please share it with your friends, family acquaintances, and anyone that you know, and hopefully we’ll see you on the next video there.

Growing up in St. Louis, I was heavily involved with sports such as basketball, baseball and soccer. It was my life, and I loved each and every minute of it. Little did I know, however, that this love for sports would have such a significant influence on the kind of work I wanted to do in the future.
